hey, we're not on Wikipedia:

"Search results...There were no results matching the query.
You may create the page "AkelPad"...
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... &redlink=1
..."

even Metapad has its own page, as well as being on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_text_editors
&
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_text_editors

i'm a fairly new user, so think a dev or similar should put us there, not a newbie like me ;)

I did not know this! I volunteered some time ago to prepare documentation (User Manual and Plugins Manual) and have a great respect for AkelPad and it's author(s) - the project is quite alive. I personally find AkelPad VERY useful (every day, but Notepad is still on my system - I think...) and would be happy to try to prepare a small article.

I have no experience with Wikipedia, but know that they have some standards. Hopefully, someone out there has some experience with Wikipedia, but if not, I could leap in (soon...).

I will however, require 2 things of Instructor (I hope you are reading this!):
  1. Permission. Is this a suitable thing to do? and
  2. Help. I will need to run everything past Instructor before posting.
The Wikipedia article, if I were to do it, would be in English (my native tongue); many of the Forum's users are Russian, or Russian-speaking. Hopefully this is not an issue, since the program also comes "in English".

Comments, anyone?

Ofcourse you get it :)

I'm open for help.

Who else could write about the program, if not the author of the manual :)

I could help with spelling, grammar, and punctuation in an English version.

Russian...ha-ha, from watching Nu Pogodi I know what a "zayets" is.

I have not forgotten! I am only an AkelPad user who has some time to prepare documentation, etc. and a desire to make Akelpad a better product. But, as you know, the duties of life sometimes get in the way...

It will happen.

P.S. anyone can post a new article on Wikipedia!

I heard, I came, I wrote...

see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AkelPad

Images (screen captures) may come later; Wikipedia has some strict guidelines about posting images. It turns out, I can't post images there until I do more editing. Geeez! Also, I may visit Comparison of text editors in the future and update that page.

Suggestions for adding to the content, or any changes required (ie. errors, incorrect facts) can be posted to this forum, or you can just change the article directly on Wikipedia.

Thanks!

When you'll insert screenshots, don't forget to show toolbars and highlight.

Wikipedia guidelines

To all,

Thanks for any and all comments re: article on Wikipedia. I would like to just make a few comments about same, just to "state my case".

An article on Wikipedia is important; it provides a quickly accessible place for users to gain a little information about AkelPad, and access the homepage, etc. "Just look it up on Wikipedia" - we all have done THAT!

I would love to add a fully detailed page about AkelPad - I wouldn't spend the time doing this (and the documentation!) if I didn't love it!

But...

Wikipedia has some guidelines for content, and mechanisms for complete deletion of a page. One of their principles can be stated as follows:
Wikipedia wrote:Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion

It can be tempting to write about yourself or projects in which you have a strong personal involvement. However, do remember that the standards for encyclopedic articles apply to such pages just like any other, including the requirement to maintain a neutral point of view, which is difficult when writing about yourself or about projects close to you.

Articles that do not meet notability and do not cite reliable published sources are likely to be deleted.
The bottom line is that I want to be careful not to say "too much" - they could view that as "self-promotion". If a person clicks on a Wikipedia article and gets a "warning box", they might get turned off right away. Some examples of what I am talking about are:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_FLOW
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notepad2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmer%27s_Notepad
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RText

All these editors "might" be wonderful (I actually have tried 2 of these in the past and found them acceptable), but the Wikipedia warning is bad. Worst of all would be if the article actually did get deleted!

I will try to add a few things to the article, but I am very conscious of the danger of going too far.

Thanks again for all your comments and support.

Surveyor, I realize your worries, but hey, on Crystal_FLOW's page the warnings are 4 months old, and the page is still there. I don't think deletion is going to be executed quickly. We'll get enough time to discuss a warning with Wiki staff if there will be one. So don't hesitate to add several screenshots or little more info. Of course, keeping in mind the thin line between description and promotion. Hmm, maybe several stages of Akel's history should be added?

It seems to be a common problem with software. There aren't a whole lot of those wonderfully reliable secondary sources! We'll just have to live with warnings.
