Can't get spell check to work

New install of AP v 4.9.7 (x86) on a Win7 64 machine.
--I've installed Aspell 0.50-3-3 along with dictionaries to the same partition but different folder as AkelPad.
--Have registered the PATH to Aspell with the system.
--Have manually added dictionaries to the Settings window for Spell Check config
-- Have pointed Settings to ...\Aspell\bin\aspell.exe
Now if I try to use or reconfigure the Spell Check plugin AkelPad crashes with the error message:
"The Application has requested the Runtime to Terminate it in an unusual way."
What can I try?
