How do I get AkelPad to not show paragraph marks, etc. ?

Sounds like you have the "SpecialChar" plugin on Autoload. Try Options/Plug-ins..., then look for SpecialChar::Main. If there is a check beside it, that means that it loads every time you start AkelPad. Uncheck it and it doesn't load. That plugin is the only way (I think) to display paragraph marks, etc.
