For instance I'd like to edit the 'hosts' file.

I'm using Akelpad 4.5.6 on Windows 2008 R2 64 bit.

I'm in the process of upgrading to 64-bit Windows 7 (from XP) and am having this exact same problem. Even using the 64-bit version of AkelPad 4.6.4, I can't open the Hosts files or anything else in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc folder. I don't think it's an issue with permissions, as I can still open the Hosts file in Notepad and WordPad. Is there another solution?

What the error message you get? If AkelPad says "Can't open file" then it most probably user permissions or antivirus/firewall rules.

It wasn't a permissions issue, becausae I could open it in every text editor but Akelpaad. Finally I uninstalled AkelPad and reinstalled it in Safe Mode, anda now it works fine. Don't know why this worked, just happy it did.

I'm having the same issue. I belive this is because 'etc' folder exists only in x64 system32 folder and don't exist in SysWOW64. Since akelpad is 32 bit it can't access this path.

Instead, you should open c:\windows\sysnative\drivers\etc\hosts
