Автор оригинальной статьи оперативно протестировал в одном из вариантов и написал результат в комментариях к статье:

Though I cannot benchmark all editors in the world, as the AkelPad is fairly lightweight and portable, I’ve run several tests on the original test machine to give you a reference point so you can extrapolate numbers acquired in other desired configurations.

I employed the “XML” setup described in the “Methodology” part. Highlighting and folding are provided by the “Coder” plugin.

Plain editor:
min: 6 | max: 15 | avg: 11 | SD: 1

Highlighting enabled:
min: 8 | max: 19 | avg: 12 | SD: 2

Folding panel visible:
min: 36 | max: 103 | avg: 79 | SD: 10

Hence, AkelPad latency is on a par with Notepad++ and SublimeText, which is better than average, yet both GVim and IntelliJ IDEA (in zero-latency mode) can be faster than that.

All the latency trends reveal linear dependency of editor algorithms on character horizontal position. There’s probably an excessive painting performed, as the latency is much lower when editor window is not maximized.

The folding panel drastically degrades the performance (typing lag is clearly perceivable “with naked eye” when the panel is enabled).

Не совсем понял, была протестирована сборка или “vanilla” minimal? Второе было бы более правильным ещё и потому, что упомянутые Notepad++ и SublimeText вряд ли были подпилены.

P.S. Наверное, было бы любопытно попробовать старый и новый xml.coder с файлами разного размера.
